Can't Uninstall SQL Server 2005 Express Tools

$

0

I am attempting to install SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Trial and receive the follow error during installation.

"The SQL Server 2005 Express Tools are installed. To continue, remove the SQL Server 2005 Express Tools."

I have used Add or Remove programs to remove all components of SQL Server 2005 Express.  I have even reinstalled the Workstation Tools of SQL Server 2005 just so I could indiviually remove those tools, and then completly removed the SQL 2005 installation.

I have used regedit to search for any instance of SQL Server 2005, there is none.

There is still an entry for SQL Server Mangement Express in my all programs listing.  However trying to launch that program fails with errors, so it is partial still installed.

Can anyone tell me how to wipe out these last bits of SQL Server 2005 Express Tools?  I have tried everything I have found searching this forum to no avail.

Bill

Hi,

If we do inplace upgrade, no need to restore backups, logins and other scheduled jobs?

Am I right?

Thanks

SQL Server 2012 Installation Fails on Windows Server 2012

$

First, a description of the environment.

The server is an Amazon hosted server, initially configured from an Amazon template that has Windows Server 2012 and SQL Server 2012 installed.  The "canned" sql installation does not fit our purposes, so that installation was removed and a reinstallation was performed.  The SQL Server folders were deleted from the C drive after the initial instance of SQL Server was removed.

The installations were run under a domain account with local administrator rights.  All the SQL Server services were configured to run under a domain account.  Most of the installations were performed with the ISO mounted.  There was one attempt to copy the contents of the mounted ISO to local disk and execute the setup from there.  The same errors were encountered.  The installation was also started as "run as administrator".  The same errors were encountered.

When installing SQL Server 2012 w/ SP1, as a default and only instance, on Server 2012, the following error is encountered during installation:

Error writing to file: Microsoft.SqlServer.SQLTaskConnectionsWrap.dll.   Verify that you have access to that directory.

After the installation, the db instance appears to be fine, with the exception that SSIS is not installed.  The file mentioned in the error message is found at the following location:

C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\assembly\GAC_MSIL\Microsoft.SqlServer.SQLTaskConnectionsWrap\v4.0_11.0.0.0__89845dcd8080cc91

So, it appears as if the file is being written (unless it's supposed to be somewhere else)

Running setup again, attempting to add only SSIS to the existing installation fails with the follwing error:

The cabinet file 'Sql.cab' required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be used. This could indicate a network error, an error reading from the CD-ROM, or a problem with this package.

I've search the installation media and there is no file named "sql.cab".

The next troubleshooting effort will be to perform the installation using the non-SP1 ISO.

The log from the initial failed installation is below.  I also can post the log for the "sql.cab" error, if that is helpful

Any ideas on what's going on?

Thanks.

SQL Srv Mgmt Studio - Local Server Groups has vanished

$

0

The Local Server Groups display under Registered Servers has disappeared.  In fact all groups under Registered Servers are not visible.   I have the same problem posted by DBA_Reaper and moderated by Alberto Morillo.   Bottom line is I see NO ANSWER to this problem.  Same situation:  SQL Srv Mgmt Studio (SSMS) 2012;  new installation on new PC; Under Registered Servers there is NOTHING....no groups to right-click therefore nothing you can do.   Here's the scenario....New installation so I got an import of a fellow DBA colleague's Registered SQL Server entries from their SSMS 2012 setup.   When I tried to import the Registered Servers into my newly installed SSMS 2012 the application shutdown.  When I restarted SSMS everything in "Registered Servers" was blank....NO GROUPS of any type.     I de-installed the full SQL Server 2012 software and deleted the remnant folders under Program Files and then re-installed SSMS 2012.    Same problem existed....no groups under the Registered Servers window.

Yes, you can connect to a SQL Engine and then right-click to register that connected server.  It accepts that registration but it does not display that under Registered Servers.   If I try to register that same servername again it echoes that that particular servername entry already exists in 'Local Server Groups'.    Great!...Right??   NOPE !!!   Even though SSMS thinks it has a Local Server Groups folder it is NOT displaying it under the Registered Servers Windows.   OK...maybe its hiding using some HIDE function.  NOPE...been there done that!   Found some related HIDE function but that was not it !!

Tried again to de-install the entire SSMS 2012 along with all SQL Server 2012 software.  Even spent hours combing through the registry to remove all keys and sub-keys related to SQL Server...then rebooted...then re-installed again.   The problem still existed in that all groups including 'Local Server Groups"  was not showing up under SSMS 2012.

So I challenge anyone with good troubleshooting skills to come up with some troubleshooting steps to work towards a solution.  This one is just frustrating.

How to download SQL Server 2012 Standard Trial Version?

Hello,

I would like to try Standard Edition of SQL Server 2012. Where I can download it?

I followed this link www.microsoft.com/en-us/sqlserver/get-sql-server/try-it.aspx and downloaded and installed. But when I check in SQL Server Management Studio (Mangement Studio->Server->Properties->Generals->Product), it shows "Microsoft SQL Server Enterprise Evaluation (64-bit)".

As I don't need Enterprise Edition for my project, I would like to test with Standard Edition for few days before purchasing.

Please advise.

Thanks in advanced.

Hi

My SQL SERVER 2012 Trial version has expired.

I now wish to install SQL Server Express and migrate my databases to this version. The DBs are compatible with the Express version.

Can this be done where the DBs are not backed up and as the Trial has expired can't be backed up?

Thank you

SQL Server 2008 R2 Express impact SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition

I have a server originally setup with SQL Server 2008 Standard edition.  All servers are currently running  SQL Server 2008.

Software was installed which installed SQL Server 2008 R2 express edition on this server.

Now I can not maintain my maintenance plans using SQL SERVER 2008 Management Studios.

I understand the concept to common components and that R2 version is higher and the common components

now run as R2.

What I have read, to get rid of the R2 Express Edition, I have to remove both versions of SQL Server and then reinstall

SQL Server 2008 Standard edition.

Is this my only solution, has anyone else been able to get rid of the Express version without uninstall both versions.

Server Rename

I've installed SQL server on a machine, rebooted, renamed the machine, rebooted, now I'm trying to set up SQL with the new name.

When I run SELECT @@SERVERNAME, I get the old servername.  When I run sp_dropserver OLDSERVERNAME, it tells me that the server does not exist.

When I run sp_addserver NEWSERVERNAME, it tells me that it already exists.  So when I re-run SELECT @@SERVERNAME it again shows me OLDSERVERNAME.

What am I doing wrong here?

Windows Server Enterprise without Hyper-v and .Net framework 4.5

Hello experts,

I have a SQL Server 2005 Instance running on "Windows Server Enterprise without Hyper-v" OS (this is the operating system name showing in the my computer properties) now i want to install another instance of SQL Server 2008 SP1 on the same server. I have different disk drives available for data, log and temp files. Basically this instance will be used for mirroring with another SQL Server 2008 SP1 (with .Net framework 4.5) running on Windows Server 2008 Enterprise .

Could you please provide your suggestion/ experience on the following questions,

-->Does the installation of MS SQL Server 2008 SP1 is supported on "Windows Server Enterprise without Hyper-v" OS?
-->Installation of MS SQL Server 2008 and MS SQL Server 2005 side by side is supported on "Windows Server Enterprise without Hyper-v" OS?
-->If Yes, which version of .Netframe work should I use, (.Net 3.5SP1 or 4.5)
-->If I use Net 3.5 SP1 Framework does it have any impact when I do mirroring with my principle SQL Server 2008 SP1 (with .Net framework 4.5)
--> Also during/after the installation does it requires any system reboot?

Jakk

Getting a Code 84B30002. Yes I know, there already some threads that deal about this but Icouldn't find my answer....

From what I can understand, I'm trying to update a SQL SERVER 2008 SP3 patch on a SQL SERVER 2008 R2 SP3 which they are not compatible from what I can understand. (see bellow for details).

However, I'm not sure why I'm getting a prompt to update it in windows update (I'm using windows 8.1). Anyone have a clue ? it look like windows update should be smart enough to ignore that update....

Any fix / workaround to get rid of that update ?

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
    <system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.
