multiple instances on sql server 2005 with different machinename

Hello, please help. I am stuck at the last step of migration from old cluster to one single VMWare. I was able to migrate and restore everything, and the last step I needed to rename the sql instance to make it the same. I was not able to do so! I tried to drop and add server, it was successful, and @@servername returns me the desired name, however, it still displays as old one on MS SQL Management Studio in Object Explorer, and I cannot get rid of it.

SELECT

SERVERPROPERTY('MachineName') returns me old name,

and my instance in Object Explorer looks like 'PR_OLD_NAME\OLD_NAME', even though @@servername returns 'PR_NEW_NAME\NEW_NAME'. SO, after trying a lot of different options, I decided to reinstall and add new instance with the right name, and do all the restores again. However, I cannot add the same name as I want, because it is limited to 16 characters, and my machinename in servername always shows as old one! So, I reinstalled it, and added the name I wanted, however, since it does prefix with the machine name, it does not give me desired result. Since I need multiple sql instances with similar scenario, I do not want to rename machine, because it will be changed for all other instances, right??? I don't understand how our original sql environment has multiple sql instances on the same machine with different names, something like 'SERVER1\sqldata', 'SERVER2\sqltext2', 'SERVER3\somethingelse'. I need to migrate it with the exact names as it has now... Any thoughts?

SQL Server Failures

Please refer to my other post: Team Foundation Server 2013 Update 4 - Completely crashing

The issue resolved itself, but basically TFS appeared to have triggered a state where SQL Server was unusable to the point an Administrator couldn't even restart the SQL services, and no one could connect to any of the databases.  We had to restart the server, and connectivity was available for a short while before the issue reoccurred.  All event logs related to TFS point to the fact it couldn't connect to the database, I couldn't find any indication as to why SQL Server went into that state.

Can you please help me troubleshoot what actually caused the issue (via my SQL Logs or Windows logs) so I can prevent it from happening again?  What would you like for me to share?

Thanks, Jibba

Configuring SQL 2012 to use a wildcard SSL cert

$

I'm attempting to configure SQL Server 2012 to use a wildcard SSL certificate. It's not appearing in the Certificate tab when I go to the SQL Server Config. Manager, Protocol properties. I've searched for this issue and the general suggestion is to grab the hash of the SSL cert and edit the registry and paste the hash value in the "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\NameOfServerInstance\MSSQLServer\SuperSocketNetLib\Certificate". So I've done that, making sure to remove the spaces from the hash value. I can start up SQL Server and it seems happy enough to load the certificate. However, when I attempt to connect it fails with:

A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: SSL Provider, error: 0 - The target principal name is incorrect.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -2146893022).

This machine is not part of a domain, but I've made sure the Primary DNS Suffix of this machine matches my domain name. So the cert is issued to "*.mydomainname.com" and the Primary DNS Suffix is set to "mydomainname.com". My server name is WIN-TH7.

Everything else about the cert. matches the criteria in the various KB articles. It just doesn't seem like the wildcard is being respected. The other articles I've found reference SQL 2008, so I'm guessing something about this changed between versions.

Does this even work? If so, what do I need to change to get SQL to use this cert?

Thanks,

Cannot create database object alert on clustered instance

Hello,

We have installed 2014 sql server on a stand alone VM and can create alerts without issue.  We recently did a cluster install of 2014, and when trying to create alerts get the following error:

Msg 14262, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_verify_performance_condition, Line 52

The specified object_name ('Databases') does not exist.

Specifically, we are trying to create a database alert on percent log used that will kick off a job to back up the log.

We are on Windows 2012R2 o/s.  In the drop downs in SSMS under alerts, we do not have all the options we have in the stand alone instance - they are not there.  Is this a bug?  Is there a CU?

Does SQL Server 2012 Standard Edn support OLAP Cube Development?

$

Currently I have a number of sites that are using the OLAP Cubes on a SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition.  I am currently setting up a new site with the same OLAP cubes, but I have been told that SQL 2008 can no longer be purchased.  I have not tested the SQL 2012 version yet and am unsure if the SQL 2012 Standard version supports the analysis services or do I have to purchase the Business Intelligence Edition for typical Analysis Service&BIDS?

I have been told that If you purchase a Volume License SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition, then it you should be able to download the SQL 2008 R2 version as a downgradable option from VSLC, can anyone confirm this?

Any help would be appreciated, as I have read the edition breakdown of the SQL 2012 Standard and it mentions "Reporting and Analytics", it is not clear whether it supports the typical BIDS and OLAP cube deployment.

SQL2K14 Activity monitor shuts down if I connect to the instance it's monitoring with performance monitor.

Has anybody ever seen this?

If I'm on a remote machine, meaning a computer not in the WSFC cluster, and I open SSMS 2014, point it to a SQL Instance, and open activity monitor:

1.  I get all the panes and charts except % Processor Time.

2.  Then, if I authenticate to the cluster's domain by mapping a drive with valid domain credentials, I'm free to put performance counters in the Perfmon - - - but SQL Activity Monitor shuts down with:

“The Activity Monitor is unable to execute queries against server SQL-V01\INSTANCE1

Activity monitor for this instance will be placed into a paused state.

Use the context menu in the overview pane to resume the activity monitor

Additional information:  Access is denied.  (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED))(Mscorlib)”

3.  Of course, the Activity monitor can't be resumed via the context menu.

Removing counters and closing the perfmon do not help.  I dropped the mapped drive and rebooted the machine.  That brought back 95% of the information in the Activity monitor.

4.  Further experimentation showed that any mapping of drive shares present on the SQL Server to the computer running SSMS cut off functionality of the 'overview' pane in the remote machine's SQL Activity monitor -- the monitor that had been trying to watch the server offering the shares.

SQL SERVER 2014 installation issue

Hello,

I tried to install SQL SERVER 2014 on my Windows 7 machine. I have the Enterprise version.

However, I was stuck with an issue, see message below:

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Setup
------------------------------

The following error has occurred:

The installer has encountered an unexpected error. The error code is 2337. Could not close file: Microsoft.SqlServer.WizardFrameworkLite.dll GetLastError: 0.

Click 'Retry' to retry the failed action, or click 'Cancel' to cancel this action and continue setup.

This is a fresh install. Before SQL SERVER, I installed Visual Studio 2015. Of course, all necessary updates have been applied.

Please advice.

Thanks.

Sean

Upgrade SQL 2008 Management Studio to SQL 2014 Management Studio?

$

Hello is it true that you can't upgrade SQL 2008 Management Studio (only) to 2014 in that SQL 2014 Management Studio will be installed side by side? If yes is it simply running SQL 2014 setup and step through & select only Management Studio components (will the destination path need to be changed?) or something else?

Thanks in advance.

How to license SQL Server Dev/Test/Staging?

$

We have a few questions about SQL Server license requirements in Dev/Testing/Staging environments, I understand we better confirm with MS but so far have not got hold of anyone of MS Rep, appreciate if someone can shed some light on this?

1. If we buy SQL Server Developer Edition license for every developer, can we install SQL Server Enterprise/Standard version for Dev/Test/Staging purpose? or we only allow to install Developer edition?

2. Does tester need to have SQL Server Developer License to do function and performance testing?

3. If we buy a few MSDN subsciption for some developers, also buy SQL Server Developer Edition license for rest of our developers.  Then can we install SQL Server Enterprise/Standard version for every developer? or can we install Developer version for every developer?

4. Is there any organization level license so we don't need to buy MSDN Subscription or Developer Edition license for every developer/tester on per user basis?

Install of SQL Server 2014 Express shows only Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP4 was installed

Something that I have noticed and I do not know if this is normal or not.

I recently installed SQL Server Express 2014 , "SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU" version, and after installing i ran the following script to check my product version.

SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('productversion'), SERVERPROPERTY ('productlevel'), SERVERPROPERTY ('edition'), @@servername 'Server Name',
    substring(@@version,1,charindex('-',@@version)-1)+convert(varchar(100),SERVERPROPERTY('edition'))+ ' '++convert(varchar(100),SERVERPROPERTY('productlevel'))'Server Version'

The results I got were

Is this correct for the version to be 2005 when I installed 2014 express? If not, what can I do to correct this?
