Problem upgrading SharePoint Services 3.0 SQL Server 2005 Express to 2008 R2 Express

$

Hello everybody,

at a customer's site there a SharePoint Services 3.0 box with SQL Server 2005 Express. Because the databases grow and grow, we decided to upgrade to 2008 R2 Express with the following plan:

1) Ensure SharePoint Service Pack 3 is installed and Microsoft Update does not have anything new.

2) Stop SharePoint Services.

3) Upgrade to SQL Server 2008 R2

4) Install all available Updates.

However, after 3) we still talked to a SQL Server 2005 instance (as SELECT @@VERSION returned). We upgraded the OFFICESERVERS instance again (it said it was successful), but still the active service is running SQL 2005.

Our findings was that there was indeed a folder for 2008 R2 OFFICESERVERS with a new version of sqlserver.exe, but the service instance is still pointing to the folder and executable of SQL 2005.

Is this a known problem? Can we just point the services to the 2008 R2 executables in HKLM/CurrentControlSet/Services to fix it?

Best Regards, Stefan Falk

IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS setting giving problems

Hello Everyone,

I have some trouble with a preconfigured .ini file, regarding the setting: IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS.

On some systems that i install SQL Server, it specifically wants this setting, and in others it dont. I work for a development house, and we install on different platforms, and would like our .ini file, to work on all of the platforms, without technicians first having to edit the file.

We install SQL Express, Developers Edition and the full edition. Is there any docs i can read to find out more about thisIACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS setting, or can someone please give advise?

Thanks!

Hi,

I had installed the business development studio 2k8 but I had to desintall this one.

Now I need to install it again and in the installation process it detects that it is installed.

Perhaps I have to remove something more of the previous installation before continue with the new installation. Can anybody tell me how to fix this problem?

Thanks a lot in advance.

SQL 2012 Enterprise Cluster Install - Cannot Uncheck Data Quality Services

$

We are running into a bug where the install wizard will not allow us to install the engine WITHOUT selecting Data Quality Services.  We've done this on another cluster without encountering this issue.

Scenario:

1. Run Setup.exe

2. Choose "New SQL Server failover cluster installation"

3. OK -> Next -> I accept -> Next -> Next -> "SQL Server Feature Installation"

4. Select "Database Engine Services" (All 3 services should now be selected.)

5. Uncheck "Data Quality Services"

6. All boxes are not unchecked.  We only want to uncheck "Data Quality Services"

We've tried it with both the RTM version and the slipstreamed SP1 version, as well as running the installation on different nodes.

Has anyone else had this problem?  Does anyone have any suggestions?

SQL and Active Directory

Currently running Active Directory 2003 with a few SQL 2000, 2005 and 2008 servers. I need to get AD current to support GPO options for Win 7 and Win 8 and would like to skip AD 2008 and go right to 2012.

Has anyone done this? Problems/Issues? Is it supported?

Thanks

Upgrade from SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012

Hello,

We are planning on upgrading from SQL Server 2008 R2 SE to SQl Server 2012 in a couple of months.  I was wondering what code changes are required at the developer's end. Currently our developers use EDMX. Is there a url that can point me to what code changes are required and what breaks if we upgrade this?

Thanks

Hi everyone. I'm installing SQL 2012, I've already an instance running in my pc (MSSQLSERVER) , it's about SQL SERVER2008. Now I've to named another instance during the installation ( for example MSSQLSERVER2012)? To default the wizard gives me MSSQLSERVE but I already have this instance....

Hi All,

User is using winform application with SQL express. Application is working fine and suddenly he was seeing exception  window with data extraction error.

Exception details are :Timeout expired.  The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. ; SQL exception number is -2.

Within fraction of seconds if user hits F5 application is working without any issues. I don't see any help online except that exception number -2 means firewall is blocking the connection.

I wanted to either reproduce the issue on my end or wanted to know exact reason for the error. Appreciate your response.

Thanks

SQL Command Line Install to include Startup Parameters?

Hi,

SQL Server 2012 is sometimes jumping Identity values by 1000 when computer is reboot (server restarted).  According to info in link below, I'm looking to use Trace Flag 272 to prevent this.

https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/739013/alwayson-failover-results-in-reseed-of-identity#details

I doubt it, but is it possible to include Startup Parameters into the installation command line?

Error Applying SP1 to SQL Server 2008 Standard

Has anyone seen this error when applying SP1 to SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition.  It's on a Windows 2008 SP1 Server 64 bit machine.  Here is the error:

The process cannot access the file 'C:\Windows\SysWOW64\perf-SQLSERVERAGENT-sqlagtctr10.0.1600.22.dll' because it is being used by another process.

I've tried stopping the SQL Server agent and rebooting but I'm still getting that error.  Anyone ecounter that before?  What is that dll used for?

Network Name not going online during Install

I have 2 servers connected to a Fibre SAN both running Server 2012 in a Failover Cluster. I have been trying to install the first of a Failover SQL 2012 Cluster. Everything installs properly until it gets to the final phase of the install and the Network Name will not go online. I have removed and reinstalled many times with no success.

If I leave the install alone it will eventually go online however when that happens and I try to install the second node it gets to the Services part of the install and does not have one of the accounts in it. It is set as read only and I cannot change it so I cannot continue the install.

Here is the log file I get after the initial install, I see nothing in it to point to the problem. I have tried manually creating the server in AD, in DNS etc.

 Thanks!

Can't connect to report server database when upgrade from SQL Server 2k8 R2 to SQL Server 2012

Hi,

I'm upgrading a SQL Server 2k8 R2 DataCenter Edition stand-alone instance to SQL Server 2012 Enterprise Edition, and failed on Upgrad Rules check step, the ONLY failed rule is RS_ValidDatabaseVersion:

The report server database is not a supported compatibility level or a connection cannot be established. Use Reporting Services Configuration Manager to verify the report server configuration and SQL Server management tools to verify the compatibility level.

I checked the setup log:

(19) 2013-01-06 13:52:06 Slp: Initializing rule      : Valid Database compatibility level and successful connection
(19) 2013-01-06 13:52:06 Slp: Rule is will be executed  : True
(19) 2013-01-06 13:52:06 Slp: Init rule target object: Microsoft.SqlServer.Configuration.RSExtension.DsnUpgradeBlockers
(19) 2013-01-06 13:52:48 RS:Error validating Report Server database version: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)

However, 1) I've configured the SQL Server and Windows Firewall, and I can connect to the database from another computer (both by named pipe and IP address), with both Windows and SQL Server credential. 2) I checked both SQL Server log and Windows Event log, found NO failed login event, so it seems the Upgrader can't even find the instance! My SQL Server instance just use the default instance name (MSSQLSERVER) and didn't do any specific change.

Anybody has any ideas about this? Thanks in advance.

SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise: Instance failure -2068578304

Hello

I'm trying to create a new instance for SQL via Powershell and silently. I made it work with a default instance but now I want to create one with a specific name.

I thought, the only thing I have to change is the argumentlist, where I set password etc.

My point is it, to rename the default instance in the ini file, with the one I set in the PowerShell script so here's the most important line:

Start-Process -FilePath $install -ArgumentList "/q /ACTION=$actiontype /SQLSVCPASSWORD=$HiddenPW /AGTSVCPASSWORD=$HiddenPW /ISSVCPASSWORD=$HiddenPW /Configurationfile=$config /INSTANCENAME=$sqlinstancename" -Wait -Verb RunAs

It works, if I remove the /INSTANCENAME=$sqlinstancename but then I have the default. $sqlinstancename isTest123.

The errorcode is shown in the title.

Does SQL Server 2012 Standard Edn support OLAP Cube Development?

Currently I have a number of sites that are using the OLAP Cubes on a SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition.  I am currently setting up a new site with the same OLAP cubes, but I have been told that SQL 2008 can no longer be purchased.  I have not tested the SQL 2012 version yet and am unsure if the SQL 2012 Standard version supports the analysis services or do I have to purchase the Business Intelligence Edition for typical Analysis Service&BIDS?

I have been told that If you purchase a Volume License SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition, then it you should be able to download the SQL 2008 R2 version as a downgradable option from VSLC, can anyone confirm this?

Any help would be appreciated, as I have read the edition breakdown of the SQL 2012 Standard and it mentions "Reporting and Analytics", it is not clear whether it supports the typical BIDS and OLAP cube deployment.

Managed installation of SQL Server 2008 R2 Native Client

$
0

(Due to the unusual constellation of products involved here, and the fact that the last Windows 7 problem I posted about that peripherally involved SQL server was quickly moved to a SQL Server forum, I've chosen this forum to ask my question).

I'm required to install the SQL Server 2008 R2 Native Client on several Windows 7 machines in order to support a third-party application (ArcGIS).

I downloaded the MSI, and can do manual installations without any problem, but I'm running into a problem trying to create a managed install package using Group Policy.   I've done this for all sort of other programs like this.  When the system is rebooted, the group policy applies and the package is assigned to the machine, but the installation fails with the following error message in the Application event log:

Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Native Client -- The required IACCEPTSQLNCLILICENSETERMS=YES command-line parameter is missing.

So I opened the MSI in Orca and created a transform adding a string property namedIACCEPTSQLNCLILICENSETERMS wth a value of YES to the Proprerty table.   AFAICT, there isn't a way to modify the msiexec command line in the Group Policy Editor, and this is the only way to add properties to a GP package.

Unfortunately, deploying the new package with the transform doesn't solve the issue -- the same error message results.

(In case anyone else is trying this, in order to unassign the package and get it to attempt a reinstall on the next reboot, you need to run the Microsoft Fix It MS provides for this purpose.

The only thing I can think of at the moment is to create an administrative install point rather than ty to deploy the downloaded MSI directly.

Hello,

We are facing big troubles installing SQL server 2012 on Windows Server 2012. Please see the screenshot.

Please remove spaces as I was not allowed to post link or images here for some reason.

After this screen, I get no error whatsoever. The installing just silently goes away as if I never clicked anything to install. No error or no success. We've already downloaded the setup from different locations to make sure the setup isn't corrupt or the files aren't missing. We've already tried doing several things installing .Net 3.5 etc. None of them fixed the issue.

Trouble Applying SQL Server 2012 SP1 to SQL Server 2012 RTM on Windows Core Cluster

I want to update our 2K12 RTM clustered instances with SP1.  There are two named instances running on node 1 and node 2 is passive.  The O/S is Windows Server Core 2008 Enterprise R2 SP1.

I've tried to run the upgrade file (SQLServer2012SP1-KB2674319-x64-ENU.exe) from the command line and I get an error indicating that everything was already at the latest version.  I get the same result when I use the full slipstream package specifying a configuration file with the upgrade action and the /QS flag.

Here's the message in the summary log:

Exception type: Microsoft.SqlServer.Setup.Chainer.Workflow.NoopWorkflowException
    Message:
No features were updated during the setup execution. The requested features may not be installed or features are already at a higher patch level. Please review the summary.txt logs for further details.
    HResult : 0x84b30002
        FacilityCode : 1203 (4b3)
        ErrorCode : 2 (0002)
    Data:
      DisableWatson = true
    Stack:

        at Microsoft.SqlServer.Configuration.MsiExtension.SetInstanceInstallStateAction.ExecuteAction(String actionId)
        at Microsoft.SqlServer.Chainer.Infrastructure.Action.Execute(String actionId, TextWriter errorStream)
at Microsoft.SqlServer.Setup.Chainer.Workflow.ActionInvocation.ExecuteActionHelper(TextWriter statusStream, ISequencedAction actionToRun, ServiceContainer context)

I've also tried to upgrade a standalone 2008 instance to 2012 SP1 and the instance seems to have been upgraded only to the RTM level.  The version information is 11.0.2100.60 and I was expecting to see 11.1.3000.0.

I haven't found explicit instructions for applying SP1 to a Cluster running on a Core operating system.  I must be doing something wrong, can someone please provide the correct procedure to use on a core cluster?

SQL Server 2012 stops running after setup files are copied.

SQL Server 2012 setup stops running after setup files are copied.

I've experiencing the same issue on two different machines. Both are 64 bit running Server 2008.

On both of them I tried installing using the files from the ISO. I initially used winzip to extract the files. The setup was running fine, but the SQL Server engine had an error when it installed. Then using the Add/Remove programs i uninstalled all of the SQL Server 2012 applications, including the setup files.

Now when i try to install using the "New SQL Server stand-alone..." wizard it will copy the setup files and then the wizard never comes back. I've tried mounting the ISO, extracting with winrar, Burning the ISO to a dvd and downloading the 3 files. I also tried mounting ISO of the version that was just recently released. I run into the same issue with all of them.

Thanks for the help.
