SQL 2005 & 2012

We have a server with SQL 2005 on it.  We just installed SQL 2012.  When I look in the services there is also an instance called SQLEXPRESS.  When I go into the control panel to uninstall a program I do not see any SQL Express installed.  I have stopped the SQL express instance and am trying to start the SQL 2005 and SQL 2012 instances at the same time.  We need the 2005 to be started to be able to look at the current system and 2012 needs to be started at the same time as we are trying to redo the system in SQL 2012.  Does anyone know why we can not start both instances at once.  If one is running and I try and start the other instance I get "Windows could not start the SQL Server (MSSQL2012) on Local Computer.  For more information, review the System Event log.  If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendory, and refer to service-specific error code 10048."  When I look in the System event log I see the following "The SQL Server (MSSQL2012) service terminated with service-specific error Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network addres/sport) is normally permitted."  Can anyone give me some information as to what the problem may be.  Thanks in advance.

Analysis Services Evaluation > Standard downgrade

Hi

I installed Sql Server 2012 Evaluation Edition.

After I downgraded it back to a properly-licensed Standard edition the Analysis Services service would not start, complaining:
"MSSQLServerOLAPService: “The service cannot be started: … The 'Analysis Services in Tabular Mode' feature is not included in the '64 Bit Standard' edition of Analysis Services"

I can understand what this is telling me, and I see that Tabular Model is not part of Standard Edition.

My question is this:
Is there something I can do to remove the unlicensed features, or do I need to uninstall and reinstall the whole kit and caboodle?

Thanks

jim

Managed Service Accounts for Cluster

Hi,

Is it possible to use a MSAs for a 2012 FCI on windows 2008 R2?  Since a MSA can only be associated with one computer, you would have to use multiple MSA accounts, but I've not heard about using service accounts with different names to run a clustered SQL service.

Thanks,

Sam

Installing SQL Server R2 (Full) on SBS 2011 Standard

We have a tiny office (4 employees). Our new mission critical app requires SQL server (the full edition). They sent me the specs, I worked with Dell and ordered the machine with SBS2011 + the Premium Add-On (Dell's tech originally said I couldn't run the full version of SQL Server on SBS2011, but, did some research and said I could). We got the quote, went to the bank, got our loan and ordered the equipment. Now, another Dell tech (and stuff I'm reading online) is saying I can't (although this second Dell tech has now changed his mind also and is saying I can).

So, I'm between a rock and a hard place. I have no more money to spend in my small budget and it appears that a second server is recommended to run SQL Server.

My question is simply can I install SQL Server 2008 R2 on my new SBS 2011 server? If so, I understand that it could potentially screw up stuff like WSUS and Sharepoint.

Any advise, short of buying a second server and losing my job, would be appreciated.

Can't Uninstall SQL Server 2005 Express Tools

I am attempting to install SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Trial and receive the follow error during installation.

"The SQL Server 2005 Express Tools are installed. To continue, remove the SQL Server 2005 Express Tools."

I have used Add or Remove programs to remove all components of SQL Server 2005 Express.  I have even reinstalled the Workstation Tools of SQL Server 2005 just so I could indiviually remove those tools, and then completly removed the SQL 2005 installation.

I have used regedit to search for any instance of SQL Server 2005, there is none.

There is still an entry for SQL Server Mangement Express in my all programs listing.  However trying to launch that program fails with errors, so it is partial still installed.

Can anyone tell me how to wipe out these last bits of SQL Server 2005 Express Tools?  I have tried everything I have found searching this forum to no avail.

IIS installs OK, but the problem appears to be related to installing Windows Internal Database rather than WSUS itself.

WSUS was installed previously on the server. The WSUS role and Windows Internal Database Feature are both unticked in Server Manager.

Running: msiexec /x {BDD79957-5801-4A2D-B09E-852E7FA64D01} callerid=ocsetup.exe I receive the message "This action is only valid for products that are currently installed".

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have already started a discussion in the WSUS forum here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverwsus/thread/a15b9040-e6b0-480b-8c9c-1d9f6be1d866/#fd7baf72-96f0-49ff-8255-15b813ba62c4 however the problem is the Windows Internal Database is failing to install which is why WSUS will not install.

Cannot detect external hard disk as backup directory in SQL Server 2005 cluster

Hi All,

I want to backup a 1.3TB database in SQL server cluster environment. I don't have enough local disk space so I think about using an external hard disk to do the backup. However, I cannot find the external hard disk as backup destination from SQL management studio. I have tried to add a file share resource point to external hard disk but cannot bring the resource online, change the database file location to external hard disk but the disk not detected, create new backup devices as the external hard disk but no luck.

How can I use the external hard disk for backup/restore in SQL cluster environment? If it is in single SQL server scenario, can the external hard disk can be detected from SQL management studio automatically?

Thanks.

Index corruption

I'm seeing an error when my server runs the built in job to delete the timer job history. Currently running SQL Server 2008 r2 sp2 with the cumulative update #11. Since the job fail, the data grows and grows. Looking through the data, this is the only timer job that does not complete successfully. So, the data itself isn't really critical to preserve. I'd just like to get the job to run so that the file does not continue to grow. The error from the logs is:

CPerIndexMetaQS :: ErrorAbort - Index corruption

There is a stack dump generated which refers to the stored process dbo.process_DeleteOldTimerJobHistory  @DeleteBeforeDate

@RequestGuid.

Thanks,

Paul

SQl 2008 R2 Failover Cluster does not failover after fresh install

I have installed a two node SQL Server 2008 R2 cluster. I used a Named Instance and the SQL Server and SQL Server Agent cluster resources are online on node 1. When I want to move the SQL Server group to node 2, the SQL Server resource fails to start (error 1205 and 1069).

I see in the application log that it is starting up database 'master'. After that I see: Cannot recover the master database. SQL Server is unable to run. Restore master from a full backup etc...

It runs fine on node 1, so what goes wrong?

SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Won't Install

I've read through every thread I can find, but can't find an answer for this.

The installation gets all the way to the end, and then stops.  I receive the following error message:

"Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup has encountered a problem and will end..."

I've tried all the troubleshooting tips.  I never had any of the beta or prior versions installed, so I'm not sure what the hangup is.

Can anyone please help me with this?

Charlie

In MSFT documentation it says I can upgrade from 2012 Enterprise to 2012 Business Intelligence. But during the Edition upgrade process it does not let me choose to change editions from Enterprise Core to Business Intelligence.

How do I do this?
